Milky Way, Trona Pinnacles

Post by MarkM » Thu Apr 19, 2018 4:32 am

This is from my first night photography outing. I signed up for an astrophotography workshop with 7 students and one professional photographer. The location is known as the "Trona Pinnacles" in the Mojave Desert. Strange rock/mineral formations. Apparently one of the "Planet of the Apes" movies was filmed here!
I picked up a fast Nikon 20mm f/1.8 lens just for the occasion. Some brightness in lower right corner from a nearby town. A ton of fun.
Stats: 25-second exposure, 20mm, f/1.8, and ISO 2500.

Stunning, Mark!
The red/purple tint - is that deliberate ?
The rock formation is very effective.
Your "Planet of the apes" comment started me thinking of the old Simpson's episode that featured "Planet of the apes - the musical"
;-)

Thanks Rod
I’ll have to look up the “musical”! Don’t remember that one.
In LR I made several adjustments but not so much for a desired color, just for impact. The JPEG showing on the LCD display at the time was just beautiful and I wanted to get that vibrant and vivid look. Just turned out this way!

Temp -106 to 3844 (bluer)
Tint -4 (less magenta actually)
Contrast +36 darkened the sky
Vibrancy +23
Saturation +13
Exposure +21
Whites +30 (more reddish)
Shadows +43 for foreground

Another couple: 6-image panorama and stars, both with more blue sky. I think the distant city lights cast a reddish hue, maybe??

Stunning, Mark :-)
The city lights could pass for a sunset. Did you do any exposures of the rock formation so as to make a PS composition ?
In any case, they're very, very nice.

The Planet of the Apes musical - aka "stop the Planet of the Apes, I want to get off".

Troy McClure revives his career.

Once again Rod...hilarious!
I love the line “from chimpan-A, to chimpan-Z”
There were some people doing some low-level light painting. I didn’t do any separate exposures of the foreground.
